And the people came up out of Jordan on the tenth {day} of the first month, and encamped in Gilgal, in the east border of Jericho.
And it shall come to pass, as soon as the soles of the feet of the priests that bear the ark of the LORD, the Lord of all the earth, shall rest in the waters of Jordan, {that} the waters of Jordan shall be cut off {from} the waters that come down from above; and they shall stand upon an heap.
And the children of Israel did so as Joshua commanded, and took up twelve stones out of the midst of Jordan, as the LORD spake unto Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel, and carried them over with them unto the place where they lodged, and laid them down there.
The LORD {is} in his holy temple, the LORD'S throne {is} in heaven: his eyes behold, his eyelids try, the children of men.
And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out.
And this stone, which I have set {for} a pillar, shall be God's house: and of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee.
And Joshua said unto all the people, Behold, this stone shall be a witness unto us; for it hath heard all the words of the LORD which he spake unto us: it shall be therefore a witness unto you, lest ye deny your God.
And Moses with the elders of Israel commanded the people, saying, Keep all the commandments which I command you this day.
Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:
Then Samuel took a stone, and set {it} between Mizpeh and Shen, and called the name of it Ebenezer, saying, Hitherto hath the LORD helped us. {Ebenezer: that is, The stone of help}
And those twelve stones, which they took out of Jordan, did Joshua pitch in Gilgal.
Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to {our} father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham. {worthy of: or, meet for}
And the priests that bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD stood firm on dry ground in the midst of Jordan, and all the Israelites passed over on dry ground, until all the people were passed clean over Jordan.
And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, unto whom the word of the LORD came, saying, Israel shall be thy name:
A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; {to refrain from: Heb. to be far from}
And Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God, and took a great stone, and set it up there under an oak, that {was} by the sanctuary of the LORD.
