And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it,
And I will turn your feasts into mourning, and all your songs into lamentation; and I will bring up sackcloth upon all loins, and baldness upon every head; and I will make it as the mourning of an only {son}, and the end thereof as a bitter day.
And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the LORD, {that there shall be} the noise of a cry from the fish gate, and an howling from the second, and a great crashing from the hills.
And in that day they shall roar against them like the roaring of the sea: and if {one} look unto the land, behold darkness {and} sorrow, and the light is darkened in the heavens thereof. {sorrow: or, distress} {and the light...: or, when it is light, it shall be dark in the destructions thereof}
Therefore the LORD, the God of hosts, the Lord, saith thus; Wailing {shall be} in all streets; and they shall say in all the highways, Alas! alas! and they shall call the husbandman to mourning, and such as are skilful of lamentation to wailing.
For, behold, the days are coming, in the which they shall say, Blessed {are} the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the paps which never gave suck.
Wherefore have I seen them dismayed {and} turned away back? and their mighty ones are beaten down, and are fled apace, and look not back: {for} fear {was} round about, saith the LORD. {beaten...: Heb. broken in pieces} {fled...: Heb. fled a flight}
We roar all like bears, and mourn sore like doves: we look for judgment, but {there is} none; for salvation, {but} it is far off from us.
A voice of the cry of the shepherds, and an howling of the principal of the flock, {shall be heard}: for the LORD hath spoiled their pasture.
And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring;
For a voice declareth from Dan, and publisheth affliction from mount Ephraim.
Behold the voice of the cry of the daughter of my people because of them that dwell in a far country: {Is} not the LORD in Zion? {is} not her king in her? Why have they provoked me to anger with their graven images, {and} with strange vanities? {them...: Heb. the country of them that are far off}
For a voice of wailing is heard out of Zion, How are we spoiled! we are greatly confounded, because we have forsaken the land, because our dwellings have cast {us} out.
They shall lay hold on bow and spear; they {are} cruel, and have no mercy; their voice roareth like the sea; and they ride upon horses, set in array as men for war against thee, O daughter of Zion.
Thus saith the LORD; A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation, {and} bitter weeping; Rahel weeping for her children refused to be comforted for her children, because they {were} not.
And they said unto him, Thus saith Hezekiah, This day {is} a day of trouble, and of rebuke, and blasphemy: for the children are come to the birth, and {there is} not strength to bring forth. {blasphemy: or, provocation}
