And the men of Israel answered the men of Judah, and said, We have ten parts in the king, and we have also more {right} in David than ye: why then did ye despise us, that our advice should not be first had in bringing back our king? Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised {is} wisdom.

The beginning of strife {is as} when one letteth out water: therefore leave off contention, before it be meddled with.

Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him.

When Ephraim spake trembling, he exalted himself in Israel; but when he offended in Baal, he died.

And Israel smote him with the edge of the sword, and possessed his land from Arnon unto Jabbok, even unto the children of Ammon: for the border of the children of Ammon {was} strong.

And if a kingdom be divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.
