O Lord, what shall I say, when Israel turneth their backs before their enemies! {backs: Heb. necks}
And Moses said, Wherefore now do ye transgress the commandment of the LORD? but it shall not prosper.
Behold, the LORD'S hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear:
And I will set my face against you, and ye shall be slain before your enemies: they that hate you shall reign over you; and ye shall flee when none pursueth you.
Though they bring up their children, yet will I bereave them, {that there shall} not {be} a man {left}: yea, woe also to them when I depart from them!
And the Philistines put themselves in array against Israel: and when they joined battle, Israel was smitten before the Philistines: and they slew of the army in the field about four thousand men. {they joined...: Heb. the battle was spread} {army: Heb. array}
One thousand {shall flee} at the rebuke of one; at the rebuke of five shall ye flee: till ye be left as a beacon upon the top of a mountain, and as an ensign on an hill. {a beacon: or, a tree bereft of branches, or, boughs: or, a mast}
And the Philistines fought, and Israel was smitten, and they fled every man into his tent: and there was a very great slaughter; for there fell of Israel thirty thousand footmen.
Go not up, for the LORD {is} not among you; that ye be not smitten before your enemies.
{Wilt} not thou, O God, {which} hadst cast us off? and {thou}, O God, {which} didst not go out with our armies?
